I have been working therapeutically with children in Bristol since 2008. My belief is that through a trusting, therapeutic relationship and with the tools for creative expression, a child may find deeper insight to a situation and resolution to their inner conflicts. The symbolic and creative nature of play therapy allows a child to explore difficult feelings and experiences when words are not enough. Over time, this process can enable the child to make sense of their difficulties providing clarity and healing.
Prior to play therapy, my commitment to a child-centred practice began through teacher training, in 1993. Valuing all aspects of a child’s development continued to be integral to my work as a nursery teacher and SENDCo (special educational needs and disabilities coordinator), to my parenting, and, naturally to my role as a Play Therapist.
Earlier experience as a fine art student helped to channel my creativity and the sensitivity I felt as a young adult. One of my positive childhood memories is of creating a ‘small world’ with my mother in our garden. We used all the miniature objects we had to hand, with tin foil lakes and twigs for trees. The space became precious and mysterious, tapping into a fantasy world, and giving me a sense of possibility that I will always treasure. Remembering this personal experience affirms the importance of creativity, and unconditional time spent with a safe, loving carer.
I am included on the PTUK (Play Therapy UK) Register which is accredited by the PSA (Professional Standards Authority). I am registered with the ICO (Information Commissioner’s Office). I have a current DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) certificate and public liability insurance.
